Little Miss Kathryn, tiny thing that used to stare up at me with those big thoughtful eyes long before you could tell me what you were thinking, how did this happen? How did you get so big so fast? And my favorite ninja super hero nephew, Oscar, same baby that I used to hold in my arms trying to coax you to sleep on the rare occasions that your tired new mom and dad would take a night for themselves to see a movie, how is it possible that you’re already a little man going off to Kindergarden? And all of the kids that I first started photographing before you had learned to navigate those arms and legs of yours, now running full speed into life , where did all the time go? Why do you insist on growing up so insanely fast? You all need to just slow this whole thing down.
Because every time I see every one of you again, the babies who were my first little subjects when I was just starting this business and had absolutely no clue what I was doing, you’ve marched a little closer to being an adult.
You’re a constant and not so gentle reminder that life moves insanely fast. I’m always a little astonished to catch the first glimpse of one of you after a few months or a year has gone by. So I make dumb comments to your parents about the fact that you’re growing…. yes, they’ve noticed and it often sounds like ridiculous small talk coming out of my mouth. But I AM astonished by the way all of you have put a new meter on life…. you are growing up and every time I see how much you’ve done in the short time since I saw you last I can’t help but think, “Now, what have I been doing? Was any of it as monumental as what you’ve been up to?” And no matter where I’ve been or what I’ve seen while I was there, you win that one every time.

Your little sister’s running after you in the race to grow up too. A baby now, walking by the time I see her next, a teenager in the blink of an eye.
